Hey all,

Well first let me explain the name of this fly and how it came to be...

I was walking my son to school the other day and as we passed by a nearby factory, I found the grass and nearby grounds littered with perfect little cylindrical foam pieces. One end is rounded and the other is flat... I am sure you may have an idea of what these are but please read on... So on my way back, I start picking up a bunch of them and took them back to my fly tying bench where I cleaned them and ended up making a bunch of these....

it didn't take me long to realize that these were actually earplugs that were discarded by the employees! Pretty gross when I thought about it afterwards but I was pleased with the end result so I went back and picked up a bunch more...

If you look at the design of a simple earplug it is perfect for making foam heads. The foam is ultra soft (almost fleshy feeling) and floats really well. Also, if you want you can use the rounded end for minnow heads and if you flip the foam around you can use the flat end for poppers... how perfect!

I tested these with heavy salmon hooks in the ones above and they float really well. With a regular streamer hook they should sit beautifully on top of the water. If you decide to add a tungsten conehead and a bit of weight to the hook shaft they would probably make a unique streamer head as well.

An excellent and free way to make a ton of poppers. I now have enough to last a lifetime. Head over to your nearby factory and see if their employees have done the same. Color and selection may be limited... And think of it this way, they are already pre-waxed for you as well. :)

Have fun!
James.
